Averett stood behind the stage curtain with his hand on the earpiece and heard a door close somewhere very close.
"I'm here," Jarek said in his ear.
It was low and rough, and it was the best sound he had ever heard.
"Where?"
"Behind the curtain. Stage left. Look to your left."
Averett turned his head.
Between two folds of black velvet stood a man in a tight tuxedo, with a crooked bow tie, one hand lifted.
The other hand was a fist at his side.
He was grinning, and there was blood on his lip from a fight in the alley that Averett would hear about later.
"You came," Averett whispered.
"Rule eight," Jarek said.
"What's rule eight?"
"Ask me after."
On the stage a voice announced the keynote, and Averett's own name rang round the ballroom.
Averett stepped through the curtain into the light.
Eight hundred people in evening dress sat at round tables under chandeliers.
Eight huge screens hung from the ceiling, each showing a soft blue logo that said Kingsbury Nights.
