Chapter 5: Hattie's Name
By Tuesday night Hattie's name was in four hundred comments.
By Wednesday morning her clinic had called.
"Paid leave," she said, standing in my kitchen with her phone in her fist. "Pending a review. Eleven clients have complained that I'm a vindictive person."
"You never even met eleven of them."
"They saw the video. They saw my face."
She put the phone down on my counter.
"Her mother posted a photo of me," she said. "In my bridesmaid dress. It says, 'Ask her what she wrote.' It's been shared six thousand times."
"I'll fix it."
"How?"
I didn't have an answer, so I picked up my keys.
The Chilcotts lived on Linden Street in a yellow house with a front porch and a flag. I had carried groceries up those steps every Sunday for six years.
It was a quarter to five, and the whole block was home.
Two men were mowing. A woman was walking a stroller. Three teenagers sat on a wall, eating ice cream.
I parked at the curb and got out.
Hattie got out of the other side.
"Stay by the car," I said.
"No."
"Hattie."
"It's my name," she said. "I'm coming."
We crossed the lawn together.
The front door opened before I knocked.
Brooke's mother stood in the doorway, with the screen door between us.
"You have a nerve," she said.
"I came to ask you to take the post down."
"Take what down?"
"The one with my sister's face on it."
"It's the truth."
"It's not."
She pushed the screen door open and stepped onto the porch. The man with the mower had cut the engine.
