Chapter 20: A Solid One

Lyle tried charm first, because it had always been his best tool.

"Friends," he said, and lifted the bullhorn. "A ledger is only numbers. Numbers don't tell you the story. What I built on Landing was an incentive system..."

A man in the front row took off his gold lanyard.

He did not throw it. He folded it in half, set it on the dirt, and walked toward the spring.

Lyle faltered.

"That's one gentleman who misunderstood," he said.

Then a whole table of them did it, six at once, the same women who had eaten chicken off real plates on Thursday.

They dropped the gold tags in a pile and went to stand in the water line.

"Tier 3 first!" Dot called. "Ladies, you're at the back."

"Of course," said the woman at the front of the table, and moved.

There were forty guards on Landing, and one of them had come across on the zip line that morning behind the families.

He was the man with the hatchet.

He crossed the ring slowly.

Harvey had taught him a bowline on the first day. He held the hatchet out to Harvey handle first.

"I should've said something," he said. "When he told me to cut the bridge."

"You can say it now," said Harvey. "You can say it to the nine."

The man nodded, set the hatchet at Dot's feet, and went to the end of the line.
