Chapter 16: The Nurse on the Stairs

The door shut behind us, and the lock turned on the outside.

Jonas stayed on his side of the little room, with his back against the boards.

I stayed on mine, by the shuttered window.

"You didn't say anything at dinner," I said.

"I said I didn't know what was best for you."

"You said it to the man who built my cell."

"Yes."

"You work for him."

"Yes."

"You've worked for him the whole time."

He did not answer that.

I waited for the voice behind my ears, and it did not come, because he hadn't said a word that was false.

It made me angrier.

"I'm going to tell you something," I said. "I've been carrying it for six days."

"Tell me."

"There was a nurse on the stairs."

His face went still.

"On the roof, before the door fell. Somebody was pounding on the other side of the steel. I heard her voice, Jonas. I knew it. She worked the night shift on my floor, and I trained her myself."

"Nina."

"She was calling my name. You were at the stick with your hand on the throttle, and you looked at the door, and I watched you look at it."

"I did."

"And you took off anyway."

"Yes."

That one word hurt more than anything else he could have said.

"You didn't check the stairwell," I said. "You didn't ask if anyone else was behind it. You counted heads, and you left her there."

"I counted eight in the cabin and one at the door," he said. "The door was coming off its hinges. Another ten seconds and the turned would have been in the rotors, and nobody on that helicopter would have lived."

"You don't know that."

"I know that."

"She was a person!"

"She was," he said. "She was a person, and I flew away from her, and I would do it again."

His voice cracked on the last word.

I had wanted him to lie.

For once I had wanted to hear his sin, to hear it from the inside, so I could hate it.
