Chapter 19: Lana Runs

The camp physician put me in the isolation room at the back of the ward and wrote QUARANTINE, DO NOT DRAW on the door in red grease pencil.

"The General can overrule my orders," he said. "He can't do it in front of sixty-one patients."

Jonas took the chair outside the door.

Ames had gone, and the squad with him, and the barn was quiet.

Bixby had shuffled to the feed room door with ash still gray in his beard.

"Under the lodge," I said low. "Seven living names. Is that a cellar?"

"A root cellar with a padlock," he said. "Ames keeps there whoever can't be shown."

"Then we find out how many are down there."

"The key is on his belt," Bixby said. "I'll learn where he sleeps."

At dusk, someone knocked.

It was Lana.

She stood alone in the doorway of the ward with no earpiece and no clip in her hair.

Her green sweater was torn at the sleeve.

The woman from the first cot and a dozen others sat up in their cots and watched her walk down the middle aisle.

"I'm not here to fight," she said.

"Stop there," said Jonas, standing.

She stopped.

"Calvin locked me out of the lab," she said. "He told the General I was the one who diluted the crates. The General's men are coming for me tonight."

"Good," I said.

"Nina."

"You let two people die and you burned their charts."

"I know what I did."

"You put a tracker on me."

"I know." Her voice cracked. "I know. I can give you what you need. Please."

I walked up to her, slowly, and held out my hand.

She looked at it.

Then she put her cold fingers in mine.

I waited for the voice.

Nothing came.

She was telling the truth, and I had never hated a silence so much.

"What do you have?" I asked.

"The lab book." Her hand went to her sweater and drew out a thin black ledger, wrapped in plastic. "Every draw. Every titer. Every night he wrote your name in it as 'the subject.' And the protocol, Nina. The real protocol. I wrote it."
