Chapter 6: Lana Comes Down Smiling

The black helicopter landed on the far end of the gravel lot and stayed there with its blades turning.

Two men in black gear stayed in the cabin with rifles across their knees.

A third person climbed out alone with both hands raised.

It was Lana.

She wore the same green sweater she had worn on the roof, and she smiled when she saw me.

"Nina!" she called over the engine. "Oh, thank God!"

She crossed the lot at a half run, with her auburn hair coming loose from its clip and tears already standing in her eyes.

The two hundred people in the clinic line turned to watch her come.

Jonas moved a step closer to me.

"Don't touch her until I say," I said quietly.

"I said I wouldn't touch you. I didn't say anything about her."

"Then watch her hands."

Lana reached me and threw both arms around my neck.

She smelled like lab soap, the same lab soap she had used for four years.

"We thought you were dead," she said into my shoulder. "Calvin hasn't slept. He's out of his mind. He never meant to leave you, Nina. He thought you were right behind us."

And I heard her.

Her cheek was against mine, her arm was around my back, and her voice came up behind my ears, soft and pleased with itself.

*Four years in his bed and she never once suspected. The tracker in her bracelet works. The General's men are four minutes behind us.*

I did not pull away.

I stood in her arms with my own at my sides, and I looked over her shoulder at the line.

Then I looked at the plastic bracelet on my left wrist.

It was the hospital ID band from Deaconess-Aldine, with my name and my blood type printed on it.
