Chapter 10: Weatherford, J.

I sat on the edge of the narrow bed with the wristband in my fist until the window turned grey.

WEATHERFORD, J.

The ink was dry and sharp.

"I'm not asking you to say it," I said at last. "I'm asking you to say it anyway."

The Space was quiet.

"Plus One."

"Okay," he said.

His voice was small and very tired.

"My name is Jude Weatherford. I drive a courier van for a company on Sprague Avenue. A man in a white pickup ran a red light, and I woke up in a grey room with a woman's thoughts all around me. That's the part I can tell you."

I pressed the wristband against my chest.

"You told me you never heard of him."

"I lied."

"You told me you were a sidekick."

"That was the closest thing I had to a job."

"You let me stand in his room and say his name." My voice shook. "You let me hold his hand, and tell you the warmth ran up my arm."

"I told you to let go."

"You did not tell me why."

"I couldn't," he said. "I didn't know what happened if you kept going. I didn't know if I'd stay."

"How long have you known?"

"Since the first day. Since you touched my hand in 412 and the whole room got bigger." He took a breath. "I felt my hand in yours. Annabel, I felt it."

My face went hot.

"You felt it."

"Yes."

"Every time I talked to you at night," I said. "When I said I thought he was beautiful, in the sewing room, in the dark, when I thought I was talking to a stranger."
