Chapter 12: You're Driving Today
Andrea made me breakfast Tuesday morning.
Scrambled eggs, naranjilla juice, and a burnt piece of toast that she set in front of me with an air of offended dignity.
"It's your license," she said. "We have to celebrate."
"Thanks."
"With your license, we're already at forty percent."
"Of what?"
"Forgiveness."
She sat across from me, a glass in her hand.
"It goes up ten points for every good thing you do."
"It'll drop twenty for every lie."
"Got it."
"And there's something I want to know."
"Go ahead."
She hesitated.
"Is my dad good? With you."
I choked on my juice.
"Andrea!"
"Don't tell me the details. Just answer."
I smiled, my cheeks burning.
"He's really good."
She nodded slowly, her eyes fixed on the glass.
"Then he's worth it," she said. "He'd better treat you right."
"He does."
"And if he doesn't, you tell me."
"I will."
"And I'll kill him."
"Deal."
We both laughed.
That afternoon, Rafael picked me up at five, on the corner by my house.
I watched him pull up in the dusty blue LUV, his elbow hanging out the window and his sleeves rolled up.
I climbed into the passenger seat.
I buckled my seat belt.
He smiled.
"I'm driving today."
"That's what we said."
"Do you know how many times I've driven with someone beside me who didn't give me instructions?"
"Not many."
"None."
"Well, I'm not going to give you any today, either."
"Not one?"
"One."
"Tell me."
I leaned toward him.
I kissed his neck, where his pulse beat.
"Slowly," I whispered.
