Chapter 5: The Closet
“Hide,” Rafael said.
“Where?”
“In the closet. Now.”
I grabbed my clothes off the floor with trembling hands, squeezed in among the hanging shirts, and closed the door until it was barely cracked open.
It smelled like wood, soap, and him.
I heard Rafael hurriedly pull on his pants and run downstairs.
I heard the front door.
I heard a woman’s voice, high-pitched and a little broken.
“Rafa. Sorry to show up without warning.”
“Silvana. It’s eleven at night.”
“I know. I don’t have anyone to talk to.”
I stayed still.
I got dressed in the dark, my heart pounding against my ribs.
Through the crack in the door, I could see part of the bedroom below.
Footsteps sounded downstairs.
A chair scraped across the floor.
Two glasses clinked.
“You’re drinking,” Rafael said.
“Just a little.”
“Sit down.”
“I don’t want to sit down. I want you to listen to me.”
“I’m listening.”
Silvana Montero was Andrea’s mom.
I’d seen her five times in my life, always elegant, always perfumed, always a little too much.
