Chapter 22: The Last Dare
The invitation came nine days after the hearing, from one of the friends I had barely spoken to in five years.
[Sheridan is hosting a last dare night at the Harbor Club on Saturday. She says it's to explain. I think you should come, Hannah. I think they should see you there.]
Beth read it over my shoulder and said, "No."
Seth read it and said, "Your call."
I called the lawyer, who said that nothing Sheridan could say in a room was evidence against me, and that I should record all of it.
So on Saturday at seven, I walked into the private room with Beth on one side and Seth on the other.
It was the same room.
Twelve people sat around the long table under the same hanging lamp, and a vase of white roses stood in the middle.
Sheridan was at the head of the table in a white dress.
She smiled at me with her whole face.
"Hannah, you came," she said. "I'm so glad. I think we all need to clear the air."
Nobody else smiled.
The friends watched me and did not say hello.
I sat down where Beth pulled out a chair, and Seth took the seat on my other side.
"I'll be quick," Sheridan said. "Since this is the last dare night, and I'm sorry for what my own foolishness has cost everyone, I'd like to end with a dare. For you, Hannah. Truth or dare?"
"Truth," I said.
"I thought you might." She laced her fingers. "Tell the room the truth. Seth was never just a witness. You two were together before the chapel, weren't you? That's why you were so ready to walk out on a good man."
