Chapter 11: Whose Flowers

Briggs was parked at the end of the street, as I'd asked, with the engine off and the windows fogged.

I got into the passenger seat and shut the door.

He turned to look at me, and he saw whatever my face was doing.

"What did he say?"

"He said to ask you whose flowers they were."

Briggs's hands came off the wheel.

"The camellias," I said. "The hundred of them on the street, the night he proposed. He told me to ask you."

The windshield ticked as it cooled.

"Alister told me about your flowers a year before he proposed," Briggs said at last. "You'd told him on your third date."

"I did."

"I didn't believe him." He shook his head. "Then I saw the street."

"Briggs."

"They were mine, Lena."

I heard it, and it didn't mean anything.

"They grew around me," Briggs said. "I was standing at the curb with the keys in my hand, and you were across the road in his arms, saying yes. And I looked down, and the ground was white."

"You couldn't have seen them."

"I couldn't see them. But I knew about your flowers, and I watched you look at the street." His voice was rough. "You looked at the whole block, Lena. You never once looked at me."
