Chapter 14: The Armory
The armory sat at the back of the courtyard, a squat stone block with a roof of old slate.
Its iron shutters were padlocked, and the lock was new.
Jude reached it first and put his hand flat on the door.
He heard nothing behind it.
"He ran for the stable," the young rider shouted from the arch.
"He has a horse saddled at the east gate."
"Then he's heading for the road to the pass," said Marina.
"He wants to be at the pass before the sect understands what he did."
Jude looked at the padlock, then at the crowd filling the courtyard.
Half the sect had followed the noise from the hall.
They stood in rows on the flagstones, children on shoulders, old men leaning on walls.
Every face was turned to him.
Tobin had not run to the road at all.
He came out of the stable door leading nothing.
