Chapter 2: The Wrong Bag
Lucia proves the bag was swapped, Rafael moves her to his grandmother's wing, and Gabriel gives himself away. Police arrive with Paulina's assault complaint.
Lucia pressed her thumb over the hole in her arm and shouted for the nurse.
The nurse with the squeaky shoes came running.
"Look at the bag," Lucia said. "Then look at my chart."
The nurse read the label.
Her face went gray, and she shut off the pump with a shaking hand.
"That isn't what the doctor ordered," she said. "Who hung this?"
"Somebody who stood next to my pole four minutes ago," Lucia said. "Don't throw it away."
The woman in the next bed had stopped watching her phone.
Rafael came through the door with Lucia's phone in a sealed evidence bag, and he took one look at the room.
He crossed to the bed in three steps.
"What happened?"
"Someone swapped my antibiotic for potassium," Lucia said. "I pulled the line before it ran."
He did not say that couldn't be true.
He turned to the nurse. "Call the doctor. Bag that, and nobody touches it but a police officer."
The doctor arrived in under two minutes.
He read the bag, the chart and the pump log, and his mouth went tight.
"The order in the system says cefazolin," he said. "Whoever hung this scanned a badge that belongs to a night nurse who is off shift."
"Then Lucia needs a different room," Rafael said.
"Mr. Castellanos, I can't just move a patient because..."
"My family paid for the fourth floor of this hospital," Rafael said evenly. "My grandmother's name is on the wing. Move her."
The doctor looked at the bag again.
"Give me ten minutes," he said.
They rolled Lucia down the hall in her bed.
The woman in the next bed watched her go with her phone still raised.
The private wing smelled of lemon polish instead of bleach.
There was one door, one window, and a camera over the nurses' station that pointed straight at her room.
Rafael put a chair against the door and sat in it.
"I'll be here all night," he said.
"Why?" Lucia asked.
He looked at his hands. "Because you asked nobody touch your line except me."
It was true.
It was also not an answer.
She was still deciding what to do about that when a cane tapped the floor outside.
An old woman in a wheelchair came through the door, pushed by an orderly who looked afraid of her.
Elvira Castellanos had tinted glasses, a silver bun, and eyes that did not quite find the bed.
"Where is she?" Elvira said. "Where is my reader?"
"Here, Señora," Lucia said.
Elvira's whole face changed.
"That voice," she said. "That is my Lucia. Come here, mija."
Lucia reached out, and the old fingers found the bandage and stopped just short of it.
"Whoever did this to you," Elvira said quietly, "will answer to me before God does."
Rafael's jaw moved.
He said nothing.
The door opened again, and a tall young man walked in carrying yellow roses and a smile.
Gabriel Castellanos had wavy hair, white teeth and the university team jacket he wore everywhere.
"There she is," he said. "Brother! You didn't tell me you were engaged."
He laughed, and Lucia felt it in her stomach.
He had laughed that exact way at the party, with his hand over a girl's cup.
"Abuela," Gabriel said, bending to kiss the old woman's cheek. "You look wonderful."
Then he turned to the bed.
"Lucy. Welcome to the family," he said warmly.
He held out the roses.
Rafael stood up.
He did not take them, and he did not step aside.
"Gabriel," he said. "This room is for family."
"I am family," Gabriel said. "That's the whole point of the good news."
His eyes were still smiling when they met Lucia's.
"I'm so glad you're okay," he said. "Paulina told me you had a close call this evening. Something with your medicine?"
Lucia went very still.
She had not told Paulina anything, and Paulina had left the ward before the bag was read.
The only people who knew about the potassium were the nurse, the doctor, Rafael and herself.
"Who said anything about medicine?" Lucia asked.
The smile stayed on his face.
The room stayed quiet.
"The nurse mentioned it in the hall," Gabriel said, and laughed again, lighter. "Hospital gossip."
"The nurse is standing right there," Lucia said. "She's been in this room for ten minutes."
The nurse by the door shook her head slowly.
Gabriel set the roses on the tray.
"Someone's confused," he said. "It happens. Get some rest, Lucy."
He kissed his grandmother again and turned to leave.
At the door he stopped and looked back at his brother.
"Careful, Rafa," he said, so softly that only the three of them heard it. "You know how these stories end."
Rafael did not blink.
Then two uniformed officers stepped into the doorway, and the taller one held up a folded paper.
"Lucia Sandoval?" he said. "We have an assault complaint signed by Paulina Ibarra. We need you to come with us."
