Chapter 23: Say It Back

On Friday, the courtroom was so full that people stood along the back wall.

Gabriel sat at the defense table in a gray suit his lawyer had picked, with his hair combed flat.

He had stopped smiling at some point in the week, and nobody had seen it go.

His mother sat behind him in the first row, in black, and she did not look at anyone.

In the gallery, three rows from the front, sat a small, pale girl with a bandage gone from her wrist.

The girl from room 214 had come back from Tulsa on a bus.

She nodded once at Lucia, and Lucia nodded back.

"Ms. Sandoval," the judge said. "You may address the court."

Lucia stood and walked to the lectern, with her cane in one hand and the other hand open.

She wore no mask and her hair was pinned up.

She did not look at her notes.

"My name is Lucia Luz Sandoval," she said. "I'm nineteen."

The room was quiet.

"For four weeks, I was the acid girl."

"I was a clip that four million people watched. My name was a word people used for what they thought I deserved."

She turned and looked at Gabriel.

"You told me that nobody believes a girl with this face."

"You said it twice, once in a garden and once in front of three hundred people."

Gabriel looked at the table.

"Everyone in this room believes me," she said. "I'd like you to hear what that sounds like."

She waited.

Behind her, a chair creaked, and someone breathed in sharply, and in the second row Marta began to cry out loud.
