Chapter 10: Terms

Lorena's POV

"Nobody told you about the baby," I said to Brett. "Then you saw something."

"I did."

"Show me."

"Not in front of your client's driver."

Through the glass the Carrington's purchasing manager was checking her watch beside a black car.

"Seven tomorrow morning," I said. "The clinic parking lot on Fenner Street. Bring whatever you have, and come alone."

Shelby opened her mouth.

"Alone," I said to her, and she closed it.

Lane held the door while they left.

When the purchasing manager came back in, I walked her through every room's drapes again, and I did not shake once.

She stopped at the lobby swatches and tapped the page.

"Whatever that was, I don't want it in my contract," she said. "I want it finished by the first of the month."

"It'll be finished."

"Good."

She left with a signed order for the lobby and the guest rooms.

Lane stood by the ladder with his hands in his pockets.

"I'm sorry," he said. "That was my fault. I shouldn't have talked back."

"You asked him to say it plainly. It's the first time anyone has."

He almost smiled.

"Get some sleep, Lorena."

I didn't.

At seven the next morning I sat in the parking lot with my arm still pressed to the cotton ball in the crook of my elbow.
