Chapter 21: Ten Thirty

Lorena's POV

Brett was in the clinic waiting room at nine forty, and he'd brought a folder.

I saw it from the hallway before he saw me.

He sat in the second row with his knees together, holding a manila folder on his lap.

"You're early," I said.

"You said to be early."

"Fifty minutes early."

"I didn't know how early you meant."

He stood up, set the folder on the chair, and picked up two paper cups from the floor.

Tea again.

He held one out, and I took it.

I sat down one chair away from him, and the receptionist glanced over at us and back at her screen.

"What's in the folder?" I said.

He opened it.

Inside were eleven sheets of lined paper in his square carpenter's hand.

Each had a question on top.

How long does the first trimester last. What can she eat. Is lifting okay. Does she get a seat belt extender, no, that's later. What do I say when she's sick.

I read the page over the rim of my cup.

"You wrote these last night in the truck," I said.

"I wasn't allowed to ask you. I figured I could ask a doctor."

"I told you not to say a word about the baby."

"To you. I didn't say anything to anyone." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I found a pharmacy with a pregnancy section at six and read it standing up."

I put my hand over my mouth, because I was going to laugh at the wrong moment, and the laugh kept coming.
