Chapter 23: Home

The Carrington's purchasing manager walked straight past the samples and stopped in front of the display wall.

She ran her fingers along the new rail, the walnut still smelling of oil.

"Who built this?" she asked.

"My husband cut it," I said. "Lane Wenger hung it. They had a disagreement about the last piece."

Brett stood at the back with his hands clasped.

She turned to look at him.

"Mr. Tolbert."

"Ma'am."

"I read your statement."

"Yes, ma'am."

"It was one page," she said. "Most people use three to say less."

She faced me again.

"I came a day early because I wanted to see this place when you weren't expecting me. It's just as good." She took a pen out of her jacket. "I'll have the restaurant order added to the contract. Lobby, rooms and restaurant, delivered by the first of the month."

My knees went loose, and I held the cutting table.

"All three?"

"All three. Your name on every page."

She signed, and I signed, and Lane witnessed it from the stepladder.

When she'd gone, my shop manager did a small turn behind the desk and said nothing, which was the loudest thing she'd done all week.

Nobody had planned a dinner.

It happened anyway, at our own kitchen table, at seven.

My manager brought bread, Lane brought a pot of chili and his helper, and the two men from Brett's crew came with a case of beer and stood in the doorway until I told them to sit.
