Chapter 14: The Maid's Son
Casimir heard the count say it from the gate.
The count said it the way other men say good night.
Isaline came down the path to Casimir with her back very straight and her face as white as the snow in the dry fountain.
She took his arm without a word.
Her fingers dug into his sleeve hard enough to hurt.
She didn't speak until the carriage door shut and the horses moved.
"It was him," she said. "All of it. My father."
Casimir had seen the maid's hands shaking over that teapot. He didn't need the rest.
He put his hand on the carriage door.
He meant to open it and go back up that path.
She caught his wrist.
"If he dies tonight, they'll hang you for it," she said.
"And then I'll have no one at my door, and I'll go home to him."
He took his hand off the door.
That night he didn't sleep.
He sat on his coat outside her bolted door and thought about one thing.
The count had said it at dinner: the maid's son worked in his stables.
A man who holds a mother by her child keeps the child where he can reach it.
So at first light Casimir rode to Ostrevant House to buy a horse.
