Chapter 19: The Hearing

The throne room was full by half past eight.

They had brought benches in for the gallery, and still people stood three deep along the walls.

Isaline saw the countess in the front row with a box of sugared almonds in her lap.

The countess offered her one as she passed. Isaline declined.

The king sat on the throne with the bishop at his right hand and the temple's great book on a stand before them.

Lothaire stood on the left of the floor in white and gold.

He'd had his hair curled.

His banker sat directly behind him in the gallery, with two other men from the bank on either side.

Isaline's father stood near the front among the court, in his good grey coat, his hands folded on his cane.

He smiled at her as she came in.

She curtsied to the king.

Casimir took his place at the foot of the dais with the bishop's clerk and the book of days.

"Keeper," said the king. "Your count."

Casimir laid the clerk's book open on the king's table and stepped back.
