Chapter 24: Wife of the North Wing

Sidonie came up the north wing stairs of Greyhold in her red cloak with snow in her curls, dragging a trunk by one handle.

She dropped it in the middle of the new apothecary.

She looked at the shelves. The jars. The copper still.

She looked at Isaline, in Casimir's shirt and nothing much else, with her hair down to her waist.

"Well," Sidonie said. "I see I'm not too late for everything."

Isaline threw her arms around her.

Sidonie smelled of cold and horse and the rose water she'd always stolen from the duchess's rooms.

"You came over the pass at night," Isaline said into her hood. "In a sledge. You can't even ride."

"I can't read either, and I run a shop." Sidonie pushed her off and held her at arm's length. "Did you get my letters?"

"All four. Big letters."

"Good. We made three hundred crowns in the first fortnight. I've hired a girl who can read." She sniffed. "Now. The dress."

She knelt and threw open the trunk.

It wasn't ivory.

It was green. Dark green silk, the colour of the pines on the pass, with silver thread at the hem and the sleeves.

"I'm never putting you in ivory again," Sidonie said. "Ivory's for women who get poisoned."

Isaline touched the silk and couldn't speak.

"Oh, don't," Sidonie said, and her own eyes filled. "Don't, Isaline, I've done the whole journey without crying once."

They were married three days later, in the little stone chapel at the foot of Greyhold.

It held sixty people if they all breathed in.

A hundred came.

The captain stood at the back with his hat crushed in both hands.

The old soldier with the grey moustache stood beside him, and the young one who blushed, blushing.

Casimir's physician had given up his kitchen for the day and wore a clean collar.

The maid sat in the second row in a new blue dress, with her boy on her knee in two good boots.

The smith's girl was there, and the baker's twins, and the whole mill house, packed into the last bench and leaning out to see.

Sidonie stood beside Isaline in red.

Casimir stood at the altar in his green coat with the fur collar, very tall, very still.

When Isaline came down the aisle in the green silk he stopped breathing.

She saw it. Everyone saw it.

The village priest married them in a voice.
