Chapter 19: Friday
The doctor came into the consultation room on Friday at two with a folder.
She was trying to keep her smile professional.
She failed.
"No evidence of disease," she said. "The spot was inflammation from the infusion, and it's gone. The scan is clean."
Mila said, "Say that again."
"Your scan is clean, Mila."
"Slowly."
"Clean."
My sister looked at me.
Then she took off her orange beanie and threw it at the ceiling.
It hit the light fixture and fell on the doctor's head.
I don't remember crossing the room.
I remember her thin arms around my neck and the sharp bones of her shoulders.
She smelled of hospital soap and ballpoint ink.
She was laughing and sobbing at the same time, and so was I.
Gavin stood by the door with his hands at his sides.
His eyes were wet, and he didn't wipe them.
"I want pancakes," Mila said, when we could breathe.
"I want the stack with the whipped cream. I want to eat it at Rita's with the regulars staring at me like I'm a ghost."
"They'll stare," I said.
