Chapter 14: What Margaret Kept
Greenwich Trust kept Saturday hours until noon, and we walked in at eleven-twenty.
Vivian came in behind me, and the egg on her sleeve had dried to a yellow crust.
She did not seem to know it was there.
Russell stayed in the lobby with his arms folded, and a guard watched him do it.
The vault clerk checked the card twice.
"Miss Ellacombe, you're an authorized signer," he said. "Your guest may come in as well."
He led us down a marble stair to a room of small steel doors.
Number 114 was on the bottom row.
Vivian's key shook in the lock, and mine, the second key, turned it.
Inside lay a long gray tin box, and in the box lay a stack of paper tied with a green ribbon.
We carried it to a booth and shut the curtain.
Vivian sat down on the stool.
On top lay a small plastic bracelet, curled and yellow.
ELLACOMBE, BABY GIRL B.
GREENWICH HOSPITAL. 3/3/63. 6:25 A.M.
Vivian held it against her wrist and said nothing.
Under it was a birth certificate for Vivian Ellacombe, stamped by the Town Clerk.
Her time of birth read 6:14.
"Look at the ink," I said.
She looked.
The six and the one were darker than the rest of the line, and the paper was scraped thin under them.
