Chapter 16: Ricky's Game
I sat down across from him in the kitchen light.
Ricky pushed the first red piece forward two squares without looking at me.
"If I win," he said, "you tell me the truth about my mother."
"What truth?"
"I'll ask it when I win."
"And if I win?"
He thought about that.
"Then you can ask me something," he said. "But you won't."
"Why not?"
"Because nobody beats me."
"You lose to your father every night."
"He lets me," Ricky said, scowling. "That doesn't count."
I looked at the board.
I had lost two games to him on purpose that Saturday, and he'd known it.
Nine years old, and he'd known.
He wasn't fooled by being handled.
So I played the game the way I'd play any real game, which meant I stopped being kind.
I took his first piece on the fifth move.
He sucked in a breath and stared at the empty square.
"You said you were bad."
"I said I'd lose to you all week. I didn't say I'd lose on purpose tonight."
