Chapter 23: The Kirkyard Story
By noon the piece had forty thousand shares.
By two, somebody had found the clip of me at the Harbor Ball and cut it next to Laurel on her white sofa, with a caption that said "the girl who has to go abroad to find a man, indeed."
By three, a woman I didn't know had written under it, "So the baby could be anybody's, then."
I read that one twice.
Then I put the phone down on the piano lid and went upstairs to find something to wear.
"Where's the luncheon?" I asked Alistair from the closet.
He was on the bed with Teddy, reading the bus book for the fourth time.
He didn't ask what luncheon.
"Tomorrow. The Harbor Children's Fund, at the Taj, twelve-thirty," he said. "She's still the chair. She gives the welcome."
"How do you know that?"
"I bought a table this afternoon." He turned the page. "Table one. Center front. I thought you'd want a better view than the kitchen."
The ballroom at the Taj was all white peonies and pale pink napkins.
Two hundred women in linen and pearls.
A banner over the little stage: "WOMEN LIFTING WOMEN."
Laurel was at the podium in a cream suit when I came in.
She'd done her hair. She'd done everything.
