Chapter 29: Terms

"Tell him noon," I said to the captain. "Here."

The captain nodded.

"And tell him to come up the front steps. Not to wait in the car."

"I'll tell him."

At five to twelve my father's car didn't come.

My father walked.

I watched him from the parlor window, coming up Marlborough Street from the Public Garden end in a plain gray sweater, no blazer, no pin.

He walked slowly.

He stopped twice and put his hand on a railing.

The captain was walking beside him, not helping, just there.

They stopped at the bottom of my steps.

I went out and stood at the top.

My father looked up at me and nodded once.

Then he didn't come up.

He turned to the captain instead.

"I didn't finish," he said.

The captain frowned.

"You said it at the gate, Gordon. We all heard."

"I said half of it at the gate, to sixty men, and then I fell over." My father's voice was hoarse. "That's not finishing. You were the one who caught me. I owe it to you to your face."

The captain looked at me.

I didn't say anything.

This wasn't mine.

"Thirty-one years," my father said to him. "You've worked for me thirty-one years. You taught my daughter to throw a heaving line. You came to her mother's funeral in your good coat. And when the company was going under, I didn't come to you, or to any of you. I did what you've all heard. And then I stood in a tent and told you I'd done it for your families."
