Chapter 31: Early

My phone buzzed in my hand before I'd even got my feet on the floor.

A photo.

A long empty corridor with a marble floor, fluorescent lights, a row of plastic chairs.

A closed counter with a sign that said "City Clerk, Opens 8:30."

And at the very front, in a dark suit and his long gray coat, holding the phone out to take a picture of himself, my husband.

His hair was still wet.

He looked insanely pleased with himself.

Under it he'd written:

"First."

I sat on the edge of the bed and laughed until I cried.

Then I called him.

"It's six in the morning," I said.

"Six-fourteen. I've been here since five to six. The security man thinks I'm a lunatic. We've become very close." His voice echoed a little off the marble. "He's brought me a coffee. His name is on the badge but I've promised not to use it in a speech."

"You said early."

"I said so early they'd think I was the cleaner. A cleaner came at half six and asked if I was lost. I consider it a triumph."

"You know they don't open until eight-thirty."

"I know." His voice went quieter. "I wanted to be the first thing in this room today. Before anybody else stood in it. Before anything else happened at that counter."
