Chapter 7: Under Review

Alistair stopped at table forty and looked at the kitchen doors.

Then at the horn players.

Then at the valet man, who had a dinner roll halfway to his mouth.

"Evening," Alistair said.

"Evening," said the valet man.

Alistair pulled out my chair, the one the door kept hitting, and held it for me.

I sat.

He didn't.

He stood behind me with one hand on the back of the chair, and I could feel the whole ballroom deciding what that meant.

"You started without me," he said.

"I told you I would."

"You did." He bent and put his mouth near my ear. "I heard the end of it from the doors. The bit about the buses. That was well done."

"I didn't need you to come."

"I know. I came anyway. I wanted to see it."

The kitchen door swung open and a waiter came through with a tray and stopped dead in front of him.

Alistair stepped aside and held the door for the waiter.

The waiter nearly dropped the tray.

My father was already crossing the floor toward us.

He'd buttoned his jacket and put on his harbor smile, the one he used on port authority men and bankers.

Dorian was a step behind him, color coming back into his face in blotches.

Laurel stayed on the stage steps with the microphone hanging from her hand.

"Mr. Kincaid." My father had his hand out before he arrived. "Gordon Odell. We've met, of course. The registry. What a surprise. Faye didn't say you'd be in Boston."

"Faye doesn't need to tell anyone where I am."

Alistair shook my father's hand once and let it go.

Dorian stepped up and held out his.

"Dorian Fitch. COO at Odell. Good to finally put a face to the..."
