Chapter 12: Not a Sandwich

I turned around in the dark and put both hands flat on his chest.

"I'm in charge," I said.

"Are you?"

"For the first part. You've been in charge of me all week."

Lars's breath caught, and I felt it under my palms.

"Tell me what you want," he said.

"Your shirt."

He did not move.

I started on the buttons, from the top, one at a time, and he stood very still and let me.

My fingers were not steady.

The sixth button took three tries.

"Clause three," he murmured, looking down at my hands.

"This is not a sandwich."

"No," said Lars, and his voice cracked in the middle. "It isn't."

I pushed the shirt off his shoulders and it fell to the floor.

He was long and lean and warm, with a scatter of freckles across the tops of his shoulders that I wanted to count.

I put my mouth on the first one.

His hand came up into my hair and held on.

"Betsy."

"I'm counting."

"Counting what?"

"I'll tell you when I'm done."

I kissed my way across his collarbone and down, slowly, and felt his stomach go tight under my lips.

He made a sound I wanted to hear again.

I did it again, and he made it again, lower.

Then his hands closed on my waist, and the careful, patient man who had fixed my bicycle was gone.

He lifted me onto the edge of his desk, and chemistry notes scattered onto the floor.

"My turn," he said.

"I wasn't done."

"You have the rest of the night."

He found the zipper at the back of the green dress and drew it down with one slow pull.

The air touched my spine and I shivered, and then his mouth was there, on the back of my neck, hot and unhurried.

The dress slid off one shoulder.
