Chapter 15: The Line
Betsy's POV
By noon there was a line outside Hall B.
A line of young men stood waiting, all of them good-looking, and all of them holding their phones.
I stood on the top step with my bag clutched against my chest and the old feeling climbing up my throat.
The rugby captain was first.
He still had the split lip from the lacrosse game, and he held up his screen very politely.
"Hi, Betsy. Page three says I like crusts."
"You stopped liking crusts in March," I said.
"I know. I'm just saying, now the whole school thinks I'm a crust person."
"I'll fix it."
"Thank you," he said, and then, hopefully, "Do you have anything on you?" I had half a granola bar, and I gave him the half.
The man behind him had a bow tie.
"I'm only on revision three," he said.
"You joined in November."
"Preston is on nine."
"He kept moving the thermometer."
"I would have moved it too," said the man in the bow tie. "You never gave me the chance."
Down the line, somebody said, "Revision three? I'm on a two," and somebody else said, "What does mine say, a one?" and the line began to argue about their numbers.
I stared at them.
They were not angry about the post.
They were upset that they had not been served enough.
It was the strangest compliment I had ever received, and my hand was already in my bag, feeling for a sandwich I did not have.
"Everybody," I said. "Everybody, I don't have enough."
That was the wrong thing to say.
Every face in the line fell at the same moment, and twelve handsome men looked disappointed in my direction.
I felt the rule start up in my chest.
The man from the bus stop was at the back, in his long coat, and he lifted one hand shyly.
