Chapter 4: Friend to Friend

Lorelei took me to the library cafe, where she said nobody would recognize us, and then three people recognized us.

"I'm so sorry about the post," she said, sitting down across from me with her chin in her hands. "I'd never do something like that. I think someone took it from Preston's bag."

"Otto said you posted it from the bathroom."

"Otto is a sweet boy who wears a hoodie to funerals," Lorelei said. "He sees a bathroom and he sees a conspiracy."

I did not know what to say to that, because it was funny.

She laughed first.

She had a laugh that made you want to be in on it, and I felt the rule in my chest begin to hum.

Lorelei was beautiful and she was sad.

I had no defenses against that combination.

"Could I ask you one tiny favor?" she said. "My coat is so heavy and my arms are so tired. Could you hold it?"

I held the coat.

It weighed about as much as a sweater.

"Thank you," she said. "You're the only person here who's kind to me. I just got here and I'm already exhausting everyone."

"You're not exhausting," I said.

"Tiny favor number two. I'd like a tea at seventy-one degrees, and you're the only person I know who can tell when a thing is seventy-one degrees."

I went to the counter and came back with a tea and my thermometer.

Seventy-one on the dot.

She took one sip and her whole face melted.
