Chapter 7: The Recording

On Friday afternoon I printed Lorelei's toast, put it in a folder, and carried it across campus to Room 214 in Harlow Hall.

Otto opened the door in a hoodie that said SOCCER DAD and pulled me inside by the sleeve.

"Come in, come in," he said. "Don't touch anything on the left side. That's Lars's. Don't touch anything on the right side. That's mine and it's worse."

The room was exactly split down the middle.

The left half had a tidy desk, a shelf of chemistry books in height order, and a bed made so tightly it looked closed.

The right half had a cereal box, a soccer ball and a lamp with no shade.

Lars sat at the left desk, reading, and did not turn around.

"Hello, Betsy," he said to his textbook.

"Hello," I said, and then, because I had been counting, "that's one."

"That's one," Lars agreed.

Otto dropped onto his bed.

"Okay. I called this meeting because I feel terrible, and I have a plan, and the plan is a big one."

"Does it involve a spreadsheet?" Lars asked.

"It involves three steps. Step one, we replace Lorelei's toast with a dictionary and read the dictionary."

"No," said Lars.

"Step two, we find out her class schedule and put a different toast under her door every morning until she cracks."

"No."

"Step three." Otto leaned forward. "Soup."

"What does the soup do?" I asked.
