Chapter 10: The Bullet

By the last Friday in June I had been under his roof for thirty-three days, and I had found the bottom of nothing.

That night there was a small velvet bag on my pillow in the suite I never slept in.

Inside it lay a silver bullet as long as my thumb, with a tiny dial at one end.

Under it was a card in Asher's neat square writing.

The card said: Yours to start. High-limit salon, midnight. Wear nothing under the dress.

I laughed out loud in the empty room.

At midnight I took the service elevator down to the second floor, in the black dress, with the bullet in my hand.

The high-limit salon was my kind of room.

Six baccarat tables sat under low green lamps, with the felt brushed smooth and the chairs pushed in.

Not one player.

Asher had closed the room for the night, and the cameras over the pits had their little red lights turned off.

He was sitting at table four in the banker's chair with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled.

Both of his hands lay flat on the arms of the chair.

"You said yours to start," he said.

"I did," I said.

"Then I'm in the chair, and I'm staying in it until you tell me."

"What if I don't tell you?" I said.

"Then I'll be here till Labor Day," he said, mildly. "I'm good at waiting."

I walked around the table and ran my hand over the felt.
