Banished at Dad's Wake, So I Came Back to Run the Boardwalk novel · Chapter 8 of 24
Chapter 8: Sunday Lunch
The club on Mississippi Avenue smelled of garlic, fried peppers and the Sunday gravy that had been on the stove since six.
Every chair at the long table was full except one.
Thirty men turned their heads when I came in, and then turned them back to their plates.
My father's chair was still empty.
My uncle sat at its right hand with a white napkin in his collar and a plate of rigatoni in front of him.
He rose and kissed me on both cheeks.
His cologne was the same.
So was the gold St. Anthony medal on his chest, the one he had taken off my father's neck at the wake.
"Niece," Silvio said. "Sit by me."
"Zio."
I sat in the chair on his right, where my cousin should have been.
A very old woman in black put a plate in front of me without a word.
The plate held rigatoni, braciole, one huge meatball and a sausage cut in two.
I had not seen that gravy in ten years, and I could taste it from where I sat.
"Eat," Silvio said. "We don't talk business in front of the sauce."
