Chapter 7: Get Out

"Get your things," I said. "We're going home."

"I'm not going anywhere with you."

"Then you can walk. It's nine miles."

Her friends had drifted all the way to the door.

Brooklyn was already filming with her phone held low against her hip.

Mia saw it and grabbed her bag.

She walked out ahead of me without looking back.

In the car she sat with her body turned toward the window.

Her thumbs flew over her phone.

"Texting your father?"

She didn't answer.

"Or Danielle?"

"Stop saying her name."

"Why? You say it all the time. Just not to me."

She pressed her forehead against the glass.

We didn't speak again for nine miles.

Brian's truck was already in the driveway when we pulled in.

He never got home before seven.

He was standing in the kitchen with his keys still in his hand.

Liam leaned against the fridge with his arms crossed.

"Go upstairs, Mia," Brian said.

"No," I said. "Stay. Both of you stay."

Mia stopped halfway to the stairs.

Brian set his keys on the counter very gently.

"Mia says you've been saying some crazy things. About some woman from work."

"Danielle Haskins," I said. "And Larkspur Court."

The kitchen went quiet.

"And Leo," I said. "Five years old. He has your chin."
