Chapter 15: The Notice

Ingrid's POV

I kept the twins home from school for two days and did not sleep.

I baked, because my hands needed a job, and on the third morning I was pulling bread when the bell over the shop door rang.

I knew the walk before I saw the face.

Briony came in with the sun behind her and a paper folded in her gloved hand.

Four elders came in after her, and behind them a dozen pack members I did not know, who filled the doorway and stood on the sidewalk outside.

The girl at my counter stopped wiping the glass.

"Ingrid," Briony said warmly.

"I wish this were a visit."

"Then leave."

"I'm afraid I can't."

She unfolded the paper and held it out to the room.

"By the law of the Hollowbrook Pack," she read, "two pups born to a wolfless mother, and unclaimed by any father of the pack, are the wards of the Luna until they are old enough to be placed."

I went cold all over.

"They have a father," I said.

"Do they?"

She smiled at me, with real sorrow.

"You told the Alpha yourself. A man in Portland."

I felt the whole shop turn to look at me.

The grey-bearded elder stood at her shoulder with his eyes on my floor.

I had said that.

I had said it to Torin in my own kitchen, to keep my children out of this room.

Now Briony was holding it up for the whole shop to see.

"The Alpha is in grief," Briony said gently.

"He has been taken in. I forgive him, and I'm sure you'll make this easy. The children will be well cared for, in my home, with a family of the pack."
