Chapter 27: The Vote
They voted in the yard of the old house, at first light, one wolf at a time.
The grey-bearded elder stood on the veranda steps with the iron ring in his hand and a tally slate on the rail beside him.
"A wolf who follows has to say why," he told the yard.
"Aye or no, and the reason aloud. That is the old way, and it is slower than a show of hands, and it will be done properly."
Torin stood at the foot of the steps with his hands at his sides.
The healer had told him to sit.
He had told her he would stand for it, and she had said something in her own language that sounded rude.
The twins were asleep on a heap of coats by the veranda, one small head on top of the other.
I stood over them.
My hands were warm, and I had stopped being surprised by that.
The Beta went first.
He climbed the steps slowly, an old man in yesterday's clothes, and turned to face his own people.
"I resigned in the meadow because I had kept a silence for seven years," he said.
"I saw a woman come up the boathouse path at first light with a phone in each hand, and a girl walk out of her school and her pack that same morning, and I said nothing."
"I am not a man who should be telling you whom to follow."
"But he came to my study in the middle of the night and made me say it aloud, and he knew what it would cost him when I did.
"I have watched what it cost.
"Aye."
A woman from the lodge kitchen was next, with flour still on her sleeve.
"He cut the Luna's band in front of all of us when it lost him a third of his guard," she said.
"I would have kept quiet.
"Aye."
A young guard came after her, one of the ones who had walked out of the meadow.
He kept his eyes on his boots.
