Chapter 21: The Woods

"Absolutely not," Morvran said.

We were back in the east tower. Kerensa was asleep on her cot with her boots still on, worn out from crying.

"I'm not asking your permission," I said. "I'm telling you, because we tell each other things now."

He stopped pacing.

"That's fair," he said. "That's annoyingly fair."

"She said alone."

"She also said she'd tell you the truth. She's lied about everything since she could talk."

"I know."

"Then why go?"

"Because she's my sister," I said. "And because I want to hear her say it."

He looked at me for a long time.

"I'll be in the trees," he said.

"I was going to ask you to be in the trees."

"You were?"

"I'm not stupid, Morvran. I'm just stubborn."

He laughed, very quietly, so as not to wake Kerensa.

The cliff woods were black and full of wind. Old pines, bent sideways by a hundred years of sea gales.

There was a clearing in the middle where students went to kiss and smoke.

Aveline was sitting on a fallen log in a dark cloak with a lantern at her feet.

She didn't get up when I came.

"You came," she said. "I didn't think you would."

"You said you'd be honest."

"I did say that." She looked up at me. In the lantern light, without her pearls, she just looked like me with yellow hair. "Sit down."
