Chapter 15: The Second Cup
"Don't drink," Linnea said, a breath too late.
Aldric lowered the cup and frowned at her.
Then his face went the color of ash, and the cup rang on the stone floor.
Silver veins stood out along his neck.
"Linnea," he said, and his knees gave way.
She caught him as he fell, and the weight of him dragged her to the floor.
The feast hall erupted.
Chairs scraped, ladies screamed, and guards ran from the walls.
"Seal the doors!" Linnea shouted. "Nobody leaves!"
She had not known she could use that voice, and the guards obeyed it.
Aldric's eyes rolled, and his skin burned under her palms.
She tore open his collar and pressed her wrist to his chest, mark against mark.
Both runes lit, and hers went white while his flickered grey.
