The old rune room had been swept, and its tables had been sanded and set in rows.
Sixty-three girls sat on the benches with carving rolls in their laps, and not one of them was talking.
Linnea stood at the head of the room with a slate and a piece of chalk.
Over the door hung a plain board, and on it someone had cut a small spiral.
It was her mother's mark, the one she had signed every bone with.
She had asked for no name.
"Good morning," she said.
Sixty-three voices said it back, in sixty-three different tones of terror.
"I'm not a lady," Linnea said. "My father was a tanner, and my stepmother sold me for four hundred crowns."
A girl in the front row blinked.
"I didn't know I could do any of this until a few months ago," she said. "So if you're afraid you're too late, you aren't."
