Chapter 20: Two Doors
The Wren Suite still smelled of lilies, because the florist had left a vase of them on the dresser for tomorrow.
I used my key on the door, the same key, on the same ring, and I did not turn on the light.
It was ten at night, the night before the gala, and the whole hotel was asleep around us except for the sixth floor east.
Elliott stood in the doorway behind me.
"I haven't been in this room since that morning," he said.
"I know. You're the only person who could have walked in whenever you wanted, and you never did."
"I didn't want to find it empty."
I turned around.
He took something out of his coat pocket and held it out on his flat palm.
It was a lace half mask, black, with one edge bent.
"You left it on the pillow," he said.
My heart did something stupid.
"You kept it."
"I've kept it in my desk for six weeks. I took it out every night."
"That's pathetic," I said, and my eyes stung.
