Chapter 21: The Recital
The school gym smelled like floor wax and orange slices.
Myra and I sat in the third row on metal folding chairs, and I held the tin dinosaur in my lap.
It was a tiny windup stegosaurus I had bought at a flea market when Milly was three.
She had asked me to bring it, for luck.
"Daddy, I'll be in the second song," she had said that morning. "I'm a triceratops. I have a horn."
The curtain was a bedsheet on a rope.
Behind it somebody's little brother was crying, and a teacher was whispering, "Places, please."
Myra leaned toward my ear.
"She's here," she said.
I did not need to turn around.
I heard the heels on the gym floor first, slow and even, and the soft hush that followed them down the aisle.
My mother wore a charcoal suit and the good pearls, and she carried a leather folder.
A man in a gray overcoat walked half a step behind her.
