Chapter 31: Graduation

I didn't tell Waylon that Gran had told me.

I just walked around for five weeks feeling like I'd swallowed a lit sparkler.

Gran came home from the hospital in ten days.

Annika drove down every Saturday.

The first week, she showed up in a tennis skirt, and Gran sent her back to the truck for coveralls.

The second week, she showed up in coveralls.

By the fourth week, she could pull the lower unit off an outboard by herself.

She had grease to her elbows and didn't seem to care.

I stood in the garage door and watched her do it.

"Don't," she said, without looking up.

"I didn't say anything."

"You were going to say I'm holding the wrench wrong."

"You're holding the wrench wrong."

Gran laughed so hard she had to sit down.

The NASA call came on a Tuesday in the shop.

It was the woman who ran my test stand.

"I said come back when you graduate," she said. "I meant it. Propulsion, full time, starting in August. Can you do August?"

"I can do August."

"Good. Bring your Gran's crimpers."
