Chapter 22: Last Flight

Mara's POV

I almost didn't go.

For two days I told Levi I wouldn't.

For two nights I lay awake and wondered what Bryson wanted to say to me in the air.

I couldn't think what he couldn't say on the ground.

"You don't have to," Levi said on Thursday night, in my kitchen, with his hand over mine.

"I know."

"If you want to go, I'll sit next to you. If you don't, I'll cancel the seat."

"What do you think I should do?"

He thought about it.

"I think you should do what you want, and I'll be fine either way."

"That's a terrible answer."

"It's the true one."

I went.

On Friday morning the line at the Pacific Meridian gate was short.

The agent at the desk looked up from her screen as I came to the front.

"Ms. Linden," she said. "Seat 2A. Your fiancé is in 2B."

"Thank you."

"I'm the one who comments on the pastry orders," she said, and lowered her voice. "I'm so glad you're here."

I had flown on this airline for four years on a pilot's perks.

I had never once been greeted by name.

On the jet bridge, the flight attendant at the door took my boarding pass and her face lit.

"Oh my God. It's her. The cinnamon twists."

"Hello."

"Sit anywhere you like."

"It's seat 2A."

"Then sit in 2A," she said, "and I'll get you champagne before we push back."

Levi followed me down the aisle with our bags.

Passengers in the front rows were murmuring and pointing their phones.
