Chapter 20: Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving was at the Hendry house, with the dining room table pulled out to its longest and a card table added at the end.
Abram had cleaned for two days.
He had scrubbed the floor and washed the windows.
He had found a tablecloth in the kitchen box that was too big for the table.
My mother arrived at noon with six pies in the truck bed, packed in towels.
"I made one extra," she said, "in case of tragedy."
"What kind of tragedy?"
"The kind that happens at holidays."
She carried the pies into the kitchen.
The grandmother had come in on Wednesday and spent the night in the spare room, with the sheets Abram had finally found.
She was already in the kitchen when we got there, in an apron over her good blouse, with her silver hair tied back.
She and my mother looked at each other across the stove.
"Alma."
"Come on, then," my mother said. "I'll show you how I do the gravy."
"I've been making gravy for forty years."
"And it's never been mine."
I watched them bump hips at the stove, two small gray-haired women arguing over a whisk.
