Chapter 22: March Snow
I walked across the orchard at five on the ninth of March, in snow still falling and not yet light.
It was the wet, heavy kind that comes down straight and covers everything in silence.
I carried a loaf pan, a bag of flour, and my mother's dented tin of yeast.
I'd told her where I was going.
She had stood at the door in her robe, holding the porch light, and said only, "Take the good boots."
The Hendry kitchen light was already on.
I knocked once, and the door opened before my hand came down.
Abram stood there in last night's shirt, unshaven, with dark rings under his eyes.
"You said before I woke up," he said.
"You didn't sleep."
"No."
"Then I'm early."
"You're exactly on time."
I stamped the snow off my boots and came in.
The kitchen smelled of coffee and old wood.
On the table, a single mug sat beside the cream-colored envelope, which he had taken down from the refrigerator and propped against the sugar bowl.
It was still sealed.
He had been sitting there for hours.
"Dessa?" I asked.
"Upstairs, asleep. She knows what day it is. She said she wanted to sleep late so she could be brave in the morning."
