Chapter 17: Induction Day
Induction Day started at six in the morning on the thirtieth of June, in a wall of heat.
I stood in line on the stone steps of Bancroft Hall in a plain navy dress, with a single suitcase at my feet.
Ahead of me and behind me stood a thousand teenagers, and every one of them was sweating.
Parents crowded the lawn beyond the rope, waving small flags.
My father was there.
He had come by himself in his good gray suit, and he stood at the back of the crowd with his hat in his hands.
He lifted it to me once.
I nodded.
That was all we had said to each other in two months, aside from the necessary things.
The foreman had driven him.
I knew because I had seen the green truck at the curb, and the foreman at the wheel, looking straight ahead.
A whistle blew.
The line began to move.
