Chapter 19: The Seawall
On Sunday night I went over the wall.
It was an old wooden fence behind the athletic fields, half hidden by a hedge, and I had found it on the third day of drill, because that is the sort of thing I notice.
Plebes were forbidden to leave the grounds after taps.
I was forbidden to do a great many things.
I dropped down into the weeds on the far side with my shoes in my hand.
The sky was cloudless.
The moon sat low over the Severn, fat and white, and the seawall ran black and silver along the water.
A tall shape waited at the end of it, sitting on the stones with his knees up.
I walked toward him barefoot, and the stones were still warm from the day.
He stood.
"You came," Ellis said.
"You wrote 2200."
"I wrote it as a joke."
"Then you're not a very funny man."
He laughed under his breath, and then neither of us said anything, and I stepped up on a block so I stood nearly even with his eyes.
