Chapter 19: Lyle's Last Act
My work friend called me at eleven on Thursday night, and she didn't say hello either.
"I have something," she said. "I can't give it to him. I can't give it to anybody by myself."
"Where are you?"
"In my car outside your office. I've been here for an hour."
She came upstairs in her red flats with her phone in both hands and her eyes swollen shut.
She showed me a message thread between Lyle and a number with no name.
On the night of the dessert table, an hour after he was thrown out, Lyle had written to it.
I know something about your nephew's fiancée, he'd typed. Her biopsy letter is on our fridge, I'll send a photo.
Underneath, the number had sent back five thousand dollars and a smiley face.
"He bragged about it to me in bed," she said. "I didn't hear what he'd done until Tuesday."
"Why show me?"
"His regional sales dinner is tomorrow at the Grand. They're giving him a plaque."
She wiped her face with the heel of her hand.
"I was in your bed," she said. "I'd like to be useful once."
