Chapter 14: Cold Water
The cellar of my father's house had been a coal room once.
Now it held racks of wine behind a wire door, and past them a stone cell with a single bare bulb.
Finbar sat on a wooden crate against the far wall, still in the torn remains of his suit, his wrists zip-tied in front of him.
They had taken his glasses.
I stood in the doorway with the keys in my fist.
"Close it," he said, and his lip was split.
There was a boot print on the white of his collar, and dried blood at his hairline.
The men had not been gentle on the stairs.
"Close it," he said again.
"Not all the way."
I pulled the iron door to and left a hand's width of dark.
The air smelled of damp and old brick.
