Chapter 22: The Stepmother

"The stepmother," I said.

The trucks were still honking.

I walked away from them, down the block, with one hand over my other ear.

"What did the clinic tell her?"

"Nothing, thank God," Ruthann said. "The desk clerk on the first two calls didn't know any better and gave her the next appointment time."

"The third call, my friend picked up. She asked for the custody paperwork. Kaitlyn hung up on her."

"She has Kinley's appointment times."

"She had one. It was last Thursday. I already called. They've flagged the chart. Nobody but you gets anything now."

I stopped walking.

Last Thursday.

I'd been in that waiting room with my daughter in her orange hat.

I'd taken her out to the car and buckled her in.

I tried to remember who else had been in the lobby, and I couldn't.

"Andie," Ruthann said. "Don't do anything dumb."

"I'm not going to do anything dumb."

"Where are you going?"

"To the hospital."

The foundation's offices were on the sixth floor, in the administration wing.
